About Us
Free Washington Project is growing a network of grassroots groups, nonprofits, unions, religious organizations, student groups, and more to build coordinated, nonviolent resistance to authoritarian actions by the MAGA regime.
Inspired by efforts like Free DC, ICE out of California, and Hands Off Chicago, we aim to provide a space for collaboration and coordination for the increasingly widespread, decentralized, and often autonomous organizing occurring across the current environment.
Our Mission and Goals
Build resilience and mutual support across communities.
Respond to the needs of immigrant rights groups and other affected communities.
Facilitate coordinated actions and events by member organizations.
Coordinate resistance to militarized federal enforcement that is proactive and broadens the base of this resistance to include more at-risk sectors.
Amplify the efforts of member organizations and allies.
Share resources and facilitate member organizations’ development efforts, such as activist training in nonviolent civil disobedience to ensure a disciplined force.
Member organizations commit to the following shared principles that ground and guide the Network.
Points of Agreement
-
The Free Washington Project website will be a resource provided to members to announce actions/events that are intended to build resistance to the authoritarian actions of the federal regime, as exemplified by the Project 2025 documents.
-
The Network is organized to coordinate response to the use of military or militarized units of federal or federalized forces in Washington State. Enforcement officers that hide their identities with masks or operate vehicles without license plates are not to be considered legitimate authorities.
-
A key part of effective resistance is strong bonds within and across communities. To do this we must break out of our silos to join forces with other leaders and community organizations who oppose authoritarianism statewide. Our community and network must strive to be multi-racial, multi-sectoral and internationalist in composition and viewpoint.
All who oppose authoritarianism are welcome. We will constantly work to expand to encompass additional communities not presently represented. In addition to actions intended to directly resist authoritarianism, announcements of free events that are open to the public are welcome when they include a theme of resistance and/or solidarity.
-
The Free Washington Project’s purpose of responding to the needs of the most affected communities necessitates that actions brought to the council or promoted on the website are nonviolent. Members agree to help protect those who may be more vulnerable by bringing only nonviolent actions to this network, and when bringing actions that may result in confrontation, to encourage participants to attend nonviolent direct action training.
-
The organizations joining the network agree to guide their members to adhere to the Saint Paul Principles at least with respect to other organizations participating in the council:
Our solidarity will be based on respect for a diversity of tactics and the plans of other groups.
The actions and tactics used will be organized to maintain a separation of time or space.
Any debates or criticisms will stay internal to the movement, avoiding any public or media denunciations of fellow activists and events.
We oppose any state repression of dissent, including surveillance, infiltration, disruption and violence. We agree not to assist law enforcement actions against activists and others.
-
Members agree that any action or event submitted to the website will conform with these agreements.
Let’s do this.
